Taylor's vs SEGi
Being in my final year studying communication in SEGi College, presumably I have gone through college life... except for the co-curricular activities organised by the college (no, I'm not an active person and I'll tell you why later).
Let me walk you through my 4 years of experience in private tertiary education of Malaysia.
I started college life late, which I had a so-called gap year before entering Taylor's University when I'm 19. Don't ask me why I started so late as I really had no idea on what my future should be back then.
So, I enrolled in an ADP program majoring applied science as I willed to become a cosmetic chemist. Everything was so GOOD and extraordinary when I first stepped into the latest & largest campus of Taylor's.
Campus environment: CHECKED
Study environment, although ADP classes are hidden under the huge staircase, but still: CHECKED
Facilities (LIBRARY & food choices): CHECKED
Lecturer quality: CHECKED
Campus safety: CHECKED
People in the campus: CHECKED
Lab equipment: CHECKED
Basically, everything there is just as fine. Yes, I know I am new to this college/university life and that I have not been to other campuses (at that time), the whole felt gorgeous to me. The facilities are waaaaaaaay too good and available to use for all students (including new MACINTOSH PCs, private study spaces, private mini discussion/presentation rooms, etc etc.
Sadly, I couldn't cope with the math in the first semester and I decided that this is not my way to go ( I hate math, really). So I told my mum that I'm sorry for wasting a whooping 10k for a single semester and I'm changing course as well as college.
*Sigh* So here I am in SEGi's ex-HQ campus. For now that I have been to two different education providers, I am able to pin-point the difference of them both.
First thing, (ps: I'm not rich) so I'll talk about the $$$. SEGi is really way much cheaper compared to Taylor's. For say, a bachelor degree in SEGi takes me only about 40k but Taylor's costs me double of what SEGi is offering me (this depends on the course but trust me, Taylor's is expensive being compared to other universities/colleges).
Second thing, QUALITY. Quality of the lecturers determine and has huge impact toward students. As same as teachers of all level, no matter kindergarten/ primary/ secondary or tertiary education. I am not sure is it because of the ADP that set the standard of Taylor's lecturer or are they really the way they are. They are professional. They are able to define things so well and are keen enough to honestly answer all my questions. They seem young but yet so passionate in teaching me (I'm not a fast learner especially in math) step-by-step. The system of teaching and administration was so systematic and just fantastic. But I felt so guilty that I failed my calculus lecturer.
To be honest, SEGi do need up their game in their administration and online education portal in order to take the lead in the education industry. Let me share one of my good friend's experience. So we few people enrolled in the same program at the same time of the year and our progress are the same. We took the subjects together and advanced together until on the exam date, my friend was rejected of entry into the exam hall. Surprisingly, the admin claims that my friend HAVE NOT REGISTERED THE SUBJECT. We have been to the classes for full 14 weeks and now my friend is being said she did not register the subject. Do you think that my friend is so cute that she did not register the subject but still attend the classes and did all the assignments? And you know what, even the head of department could not help and my friend had to retake the whole damn thing. Isn't it ridiculous and makes no sense?
And now, facilities. The library is incomparable, not even the amount of chairs and tables that are available for students to sit and study. This is the library that I favor most even being compared to the national library. Well done, Taylor's.
FOOD! How can a campus be lack of food??? Taylor's have so much variety from costly Starbucks to RM3.50 fried spaghetti. Old Town White Coffee starts operation at 6AM until night. Don't think you will hunger to death if you have bucks with you. Anyhow, SEGi does have a small canteen about half of a floor's size with normal priced tasteless+oil-flooded fried rice, fried nugget pieces, egg mayo sandwich (half spreaded, as in the egg mayo covers only the middle part of the bread instead of the whole). SEGi students do have other choices but to walk over to the neighbor building of a shopping mall that opens at 11AM.
Next, campus environment. I can't compare both the campus as they are two different thing. One is a campus covering 27 acres of land and the other one is just a building (No, I do not sound as sad as I wrote this).
It is not that I love to compare things but I wish to share the differences of the campuses that I have had experience with. You do get what you pay for. I am not saying that my current college is bad but it is not as good as the other one. I know that it is hard to match both campuses' environment, size and facilities as one is new and the other one is such an old building. But they could always do better in human communication and quality wise. I, as an alumni of SEGi do not wish to carry or create a bad name for my college too but this is just my views and opinions. I am not here to write bad or good about any party but just to share.
If my thoughts caused any negative circumstances to you, then I'm sorry but you can close this page and never visit again. It's just how I feel and what I think and I'm sorry for the long post!
