Online Journalism 101- Post #1: What defines news in the online environment?
'NEWS' is not a new word to the society- by least; it should not
be a new word to you. Where do we get news from? NEWSPAPER. But... wait, its
year 2017 and we have something called internet.
The internet (or cyberspace) is
free for anyone to use which made us all an author and this allows massive dissemination
of information. With or without verification, accountability and independence,
everyone can write about anything and everything, whether it is a praise or
pure condemnation.
Back then when we only rely on
printed medium (eg: newspaper) to retrieve news, no reader will ever doubt the
reliability of the news story that they have just read, or at least the word
'fake news' never crosses their minds. Why? Because the news in newspapers is
written by true journalists and filtered by editors. Well, some printed news might
not be as ‘true’ but it is still better than online news (such as social media
and 3rd party websites, NOT official online news outlets) in
terms of trustworthiness and reliability.
Whilst online journalism could be bad for passive audiences, it acts as a better platform to disseminate news to reach wider community by converging the traditional media platforms- print, audio and visual. Online news can provide all text, pictures, audio and video at once. Plus, external links to additional information can also be embedded for audience's reference. Online journalism are much more interactive and feedback from audiences are obtainable.
Note: It is just important for every one of us to be an active reader, to think about what we read regardless online or printed medium. We should be rational in interpreting news & information being fed to us to avoid being coaxed into trusting something untruthful.
Update:
Now, now, I realised that I have missed out some points in differentiating between what actually is journalism and other types of writing. Only it is journalism when an article or a piece of writing are able to:
● Educate, inform and entertain people
● Bring about societal change
● Hold people accountable
