Online Journalism 101- Post #2: Key factors affecting the preparation and delivery of online news
Whilst journalism or better known as news writing is not an easy process, the presence of internet which enables news to be available online exacerbated everything.
With the availability of multimedia (such as video clips, audio recordings and footage), news writers tend to be distracted into getting something extra to compliment the news story, losing focus in writing news story the best possible way. Technology shall not get in the way of producing the best journalistic piece.
Furthermore, the news story do not need to be all things to all people even though people from Alaska are able to find and read the story online. What would it be of interest to them if Kuala Lumpur has a new MRT line which connects Kajang to Cheras? Focus on one's region (the importance of proximity) is what best one journalist can do.
Time is the biggest enemy of all. It has been hectic enough for journalists to catch, attend and produce a write-up for tomorrow's edition, and now, news are going online where it has to be update immediately when the event unfold. Having to race with time and other news outlets to be the first to break the news, the quality of the write-ups are compromised. I have detected faults (spelling and syntax errors) in online journalism as journalists have to rush in producing the story, and I think this should not be the way.
Other factors such as advertising pressures, business pressures such as lack of staff, lack of training provided for staff as well as in-house policies adds up to a huge load in affecting the preparation and delivery of online news.
